〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Jack Knight
CHARACTER AGE: 30s
SERIES: DC Comics (Pre-Boot) / Starman
CHRONOLOGY: Just post-Among the Stars
CLASS: Hero!
HOUSING: Roomates!
BACKGROUND: Jack's wiki article is pretty good for covering his chronology, but the basic jist is that Jack's a legacy superhero. The son of the original Starman (though there are quite a few Starmen between Jack and Ted), Jack grew up totally into superheroic's until some of the more unfortunate parts of the life made him jaded and frustrated with his father and the family legacy. Unfortunately, however, his brother is killed and in the midst of both protecting his own life and avenging his brother, he ends up taking the mantel, though he does tell his father that he'd better start engineering some of the tech that he put into the cosmic rod into actual sustainable energy for the rest of the world. His early career is a bit rough, what with having to fight Captain Marvel at one point over a misunderstanding, as well as being sexually assaulted by a villainess, but despite this, Jack gradually warms up to superheroes again, making allies by joining the newly-reformed JSA, teaming up with Wesley Dodds, befriending the only friendly version of Solomon Grundy ever, and finding/rescuing the Starman of the 70s, Mikaal Tomas. He is also befriended by the Shade, and their relationship is a running theme throughout the book.
Eventually, Jack actually finds love in the personage of a woman named Sadie (though they don't exactly start smoothly) who it turns out is 'related' to one of the other previous Starmen, Will Payton. That is what prompts Jack to launch a truly epic trip through space to try and help/save/find out what happened to him which lets him meet a very interesting variety of people and includes my favorite line in comics ever:

In the end, he assists not one but two Starmen, as Will had merged with Prince Gavyn from the planet he'd journeyed to, and ends up returning to Earth. And it is from here I'll be pulling him since that just tosses him into the madness that is Grand Guignol.
PERSONALITY: When the story starts for Jack, he's one of the more comfortable characters you'd be apt to find. He has a successful business, he has a tenuous but still civil relationship with his family, and his brother has taken on the role that his father wanted to pass on.
POWER: The wiki lists his martial arts (jujutsu) and his knowledge of history (both when it comes to collectibles and, honestly, most things but especially older super heroes). He also has psychic abilities that have been practically latent throughout his life that have been used by those who have passed on to 'visit' with him in his dreams. He spends many a visit with his brother David throughout the years of the run, but he also gets to meet with older members of the JSA who have passed on, and on more than one occasion had some manner of minor premonition or feelings in precarious situations.
More practically, he has the cosmic staff, a prototype model of his father's cosmic rod, which he uses extensively. It gives him the power of rapid flight, energy blasts, light blasts, manipulation of objects, and manipulation of energy. It can be used to create defensive forcefields, and it can be directed/used without being touched as it is mentally attuned to its user.
